Matchnight

One month in

Matchnight is one month old today. On 8 October it was a rough first prototype. A month and 74 versions later, it plays season after season: any of 92 English clubs, cup runs, European nights, transfers you actually negotiate, a board that can sack you, a Saturday night highlights show, and every match of yours acted out on a 2D pitch, with commentary.

Behind the screens sit more than 90,000 words of game text, about the length of a novel, and more than 130 automatic checks that test the game before a new version goes out. Kevin, the one fan behind Matchnight, plays every build and decides every feature. The code, the words and the checks are written with Claude, an AI from Anthropic, and four test players report what they find. Kevin also made 30 songs with Suno for the three bands invented for the game.

Not bad for a month. But as any promoted side will tell you, the hard part starts now. Matchnight is still a prototype: only a handful of people have played it, its own look is designed but not built, and the step from a browser prototype to the full game on PC and Android is still ahead. Still to come: that new look, a living pitch, the soundtrack in the game and Story Mode. First chance to play: expected summer 2027.
