Why Matchnight

A management game that remembers

Quick to pick up, and the longer you stay, the more your club's story grows.

  • Your results write the story

Every season leaves its mark, and every Saturday night the highlights show picks over your weekend. The people around your club remember what you did, and each season ends with a chapter of your story. Club records name their holders and change hands, a retiring legend gets a guard of honour in his last home game, and academy graduates feel the pull of home.

  • Quick to play, real choices

A few clear calls each week, and every one counts: who plays, who you sign, what you spend. Follow the match on a 2D pitch or as text, or take the quick result and move on.

  • A whole football world

128 nations play on around you, with leagues abroad, cups, summer tournaments and award nights. Every player, club and town has a reputation that grows with what they do, and a tap on any name opens its card.

  • The Saturday night highlights show on a phone: the First Division goals round-up, a pundit's line on the weekend, and your club's 4–1 win at Huddersfield Rovers lit at the top of the results, with the scorers under each match.
Your weekend on the Saturday night show
  • The season's comic pages on a phone: the first page of chapter 1, with the players of Hampstead Park in purple lifting the First Division trophy under the floodlights, and the title A season with no ceiling.
Every season ends as a comic chapter
  • The Daily Whistle's front page after the title: Top dogs! Hampstead Park lead the pack, with the reporter's story, a transfer rumour and a pundit's verdict.
Big weeks make the front page
  • The Team screen: a 4-4-2 on the pitch, the approach set to Balanced, the penalty taker and captain chosen, and the team gel bar at 74, coming together.
Pick the team and the approach
  • The club's History page: its honours, with the last time each was won, and the cover of your career book, where every season becomes a chapter.
Your club's honours and your career book

Built to last

  • Your career survives every update

It saves itself every match week, old saves keep working through every new version, and you have three slots plus save to a file.

  • Checked before it reaches you

Dozens of automated checks on phone and desktop before every version, old saves included, and long careers played out before each new build.

  • For the love of the game

Made by one football fan with AI tools, who plays every build and listens to the players testing it.

On a PC

More room on a big screen

The same game in a browser on a laptop, with room for more: the 2D pitch across the whole screen, your next match and the league side by side, and your office behind the club messages. A full PC layout comes with the Steam version.

  • The live match at full screen on a laptop: GOAL! over the 2D pitch as Viktoria Frankfurt take the lead against Birmingham Wanderers after 20 minutes, the crowd in the stands and the scoreboard above.
A goal on a European night, the pitch across the whole screen
  • The Home screen on a laptop: a European night next, away at Viktoria Frankfurt in the league phase, both sides compared in attack, midfield, defence and team gel, two pundits' predictions, and the Premier Division table beside it with Birmingham Wanderers picked out in 6th.
Your next match beside the league table
  • Club messages on a laptop: the season ticket, kit and shirt deals and the board's welcome, over the manager's office with the floodlit pitch through the window and trophies in a cabinet.
Your office behind the club messages
  • The Premier Division table on a laptop after six matches, each club's last five results, Birmingham Wanderers picked out in 6th, and the weekend's results beside it.

Coming: Story Mode

Everyone in town knows why he left. Except you.

You take over a small seaside club two days before the season. The last manager is gone, the town is lying badly, and the only person who will talk to you is the one you've been told to avoid. Your results and your choices write the story over eight seasons, and the secret gets heavier with every win. When the story ends, play on: your save carries on as a normal career, in a football world that only your story could have made.

Four managers said no. You're the fifth.

  1. WednesdayThe manager leaves at midnight, in the rain.
  2. ThursdayYou arrive. Nobody mentions it.
  3. SaturdayThe season starts. The derby, at home.

How you play

Your club, your calls

Eight jobs, one club. Each comes down to a few choices that matter, so the seasons move quickly.

  • Pick the team

Choose the formation and the approach, then the penalty taker and the captain. A gel bar shows how well your side plays together, and new signings need time to settle in.

  • Match night

Follow every move on a 2D pitch, with goals replayed up close, a commentary line and a crowd that reacts to every chance. Or read it as text, or take the quick result.

  • Run the backroom

Hire an assistant, a coach, a physio and a scout, each graded and with one clear job, and choose which jobs your assistant takes off your hands. When the matches pile up over Christmas, rotate the squad.

  • Do the deals

Offer a fee to the club and a wage to the player. Players weigh up your club's reputation, little-known gems come cheaper, and every refusal tells you why.

  • Balance the books

Wages, gate money, the club shop and the bar, plus kit deals, naming rights and season tickets. A well-run club can pay its way at every level.

  • Keep the board on side

Every board has its own personality and its own targets. A takeover can turn your club upside down, and when you go after a new job, the chair interviews you first.

  • Face the media

Big moments that need your call, weekly front pages from reporters you get to know, and a short why after every match. Then a Saturday night highlights show, and live cup draws with the pundits.

  • Build a legacy

Records that change hands, club legends, a Hall of Fame and farewells for the greats. Every trophy you win gets its own engraved plate in your trophy case.

The pyramid

Start anywhere. Climb to Europe.

Pick any of the 92 clubs in the top four English divisions. Win promotion, survive the drop, and chase a place on the continent.

Every club is set in a real town, with its own invented name, players and ground.

  1. EuropeThe big nights
  2. Premier Division20 clubs
  3. First Division24 clubs
  4. Second Division24 clubs
  5. Third Division24 clubs

What's coming

Next on the team sheet

What we're building next. Each step goes into the game when it's ready, and the plan may change as we play-test.

  1. A living pitch

The 2D match view comes to life, with more natural running, passing and shooting, so every match looks and feels more like the real thing.

  2. The soundtrack

Three bands invented for the game, each with an album, playing on every menu screen. Shuffle them, skip a song, or untick the ones you'd rather not hear.

    Meet the bands
  3. Story Mode

Eight seasons at a small seaside club, a manager who vanished the night before you arrived, and a town that knows why. Your results write the story, and every choice is remembered. When it ends, play on as a normal career, in the world your story made.

On the bench

Coming later: call the shots from the touchline, take the big kicks yourself, and in time play whole matches.

After that: more depth, then getting Matchnight ready for PC and Android, with a full PC layout, plus Steam Deck, cloud saves and achievements on Steam.
